The mission of Mesa County Solid Waste Management is to provide Mesa County residents with environmentally responsible and fiscally accessible waste disposal options.
The Solid Waste Management Division encompasses the landfill, compost, 4 transfer stations throughout the county, and the Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (HWCF).
The HWCF is one of only 8 similar facilities in the state of Colorado.
It is intended to divert regulated waste and other items that may be harmful to the environment and the public, and ensure proper disposal or recycling of those items.

Summary:
The Environmental Specialist I position is the entry-level position at the HWCF and is essential to the smooth operation of processing hazardous and universal waste materials that are received from businesses and Mesa County residents.
This is a labor intensive position with extended periods of time spent standing, walking, lifting or sorting various waste types.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, enjoys physical tasks, is enthusiastic about environmental health and responsible waste management, takes pride in serving the community, and will represent Mesa County with professionalism and respect.
This is a full-time position:
40 hours per week, five days per week (Tuesday-Saturday) with varying work hours from 6-9 hour shifts beginning at 7:

Annual training and special events may require irregular hours, however, weekly totals will generally not exceed 40 hours.
Essential Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

) Assist Mesa County residential and business customers by screening and receiving their waste, and providing information for proper disposal options; Assist Mesa County residential customers utilizing the materials reuse and recycling programs, and ensure these areas of the facility are clean, accessible, and properly maintained; Properly identify, classify, inventory, and store household and VSQG wastes received at the HWCF.
Safely segregate and/or consolidate hazardous materials based on chemical compatibility for storage, disposal, and recycling.
Utilize a variety of commercial and industrial equipment to bulk and process paints, light bulbs, batteries, and other materials for storage and shipment including an electric bulb crusher and can crushers; Manually sort and bulk bulbs, batteries, oil and latex paints, motor oil, flammable liquids, electronics and other waste for storage, shipment, and re-use; Ensure proper sorting and packaging of e-waste.
Correctly label containers and drums containing waste materials according to local, state, and federal regulations for hazardous materials storage and transportation; Work with various Solid Waste and other Mesa County employees, including the Department of Corrections work crew to accomplish tasks essential to facility operations; Check the public recycling bins in the HWC Facility recycling lot for contamination and empty the trash bins.
Maintain good housekeeping practices at the HWC Facility.
Cleans facility and grounds as needed.
Clean up spills according to the Health and Safety procedures.
Safely operate forklift/skid loader to move pallets of e-waste and other materials on-site.
Oral and written communications must be clear and effective.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
Required:
Awareness and execution of safe working practices Excellent customer service in person and over the phone Ability and willingness to work well with others, and work well independently Physical ability to lift, carry, and move items indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions, sloped ground, and up and down stairs Attention to detail Ability to focus on and perform a task for an extended period of time during processing days Ability to prioritize and transition from task to task in a fast-paced environment Read and follow directions in English, both orally and in writing Communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing Recommended:
Understand how to read and interpret SDS sheets and industrial chemical labeling Experience safely operating a forklift with or without different kinds of lifting attachments Experience safely operating a side-by-side UTV with or without plow and sweeping attachments Experience with industrial processing machinery and equipment including can crushers, pallet jacks, drum dollies, etc.
Minimum Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

High school diploma or equivalent education certificate OR any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job.
Licenses and Certifications:

) OHSA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification DOT Security Awareness Training CPR and First Aid certifications Medical monitoring exams will be provided and are required in order to begin employment, annually during employment, and upon departure.
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 80 pounds regularly, and team lifting up to 250 pounds occasionally.
The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold for long duration, outside atmospheric conditions, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods of time.
The employee is frequently exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
The employee is occasionally exposed to possible bodily injury from radiation, explosions or toxic or caustic chemicals.
The employee is frequently exposed to loud noise.
Employee must be able to respond quickly to sound and dangerous situations.
Employee must be able to move safely over uneven terrain.
Employee must wear personal protective equipment like gloves and steel toe boots daily, may occasionally wear supplied air.
