Summary:
Maintains the security of the Evidence section of the Investigations division in order to preserve the integrity of evidence and the chain of custody in the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
Properly logs, processes, secures, and maintains evidence.
Responds to evidence-related questions or problems on an on-call basis 24-hours per day.
Essential Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

) Upon receipt, promptly enters into computer (1) evidence and/or (2) non-evidence property received by the Sheriff's Office; processes non-evidence property and assigns to proper storage area; carefully marks evidence packages and places in assigned storage locations; ensures special handling of all evidence with possible latent prints, trace substances (e.
g.
, hairs, fibers, blood, semen, etc.
), and/or retention of value until item(s) are sent to lab; ensures special handling of narcotics, bio-hazard, and/or other items which require refrigeration; ensures that evidence forms are correctly completed.
Packs and seals evidence sent to CBI for testing; ensures proper handling of items to be mailed or transported; may be required to pick up items when lab testing is completed; checks to ensure that items are returned with the proper signatures and dates necessary to maintain chain of custody.
Required to maintain cleanliness and maintenance of all evidence areas.
Testifies in Court regarding evidence preservation, handling, and chain of custody; packages items for Court and ensures proper transfer from Evidence section to Court; maintains proper paperwork for all items entered as exhibits until such items are released back into the custody of the Evidence section.
Researches cases for possible releases or destruction of items; obtains the Officer's or District Attorney's authorization to release items; schedules times for release.
Schedules time for viewing of evidence by District Attorneys and/or defense attorneys; prepares copies of documents and digital media or photographs evidence as necessary.
Supplies Officers with packaging supplies for processing evidence.
Calibrates scales used by Officers in the Evidence section.
Checks lockers for security; cleans drying rooms after use; changes filters in drying rooms.
Oral and written communications must be clear and effective.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience.
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 100 pounds.
May be exposed to communicable diseases, infections, blood and bodily fluids.
The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold for long duration, outside atmospheric conditions, and dust for sustained periods of time.
The employee is occasionally exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock, falling from high places, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

Fluent in both English and Spanish at the time of hire - $5,000.
00 bonus (Effective 8/22/2018 - Will use Workforce Center test - Call Center Spanish-English Bilingual (Audio) Need 80% or higher to receive the bonus.
Associates Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college - $3,000.
00 bonus Bachelors Degree from accredited college - $5000,00 bonus Masters Degree from accredited college - $7000.
00 bonus Active duty military service of 2 or more years - $4000.
00 bonus 2-3 years of related work experience - applicant will be hired at Step 2 of the pay range as described in the Pay Plan Policy 1034.
Three or more years of related work experience - applicant will be hired at Step 3 of the pay range as described in the Pay Plan Policy 1034.
Part-time Employees.
5 FTE will be eligible for the incentives at 50% of the amount of bonus and paid in the same way full time employees receive them.
Only one bonus will be awarded per applicant; however, applicant may qualify for the step increase for experience and one bonus level.
All bonuses will be paid in two parts:
50% of bonus paid upon completion of the field-training program.
Remaining 50% paid upon completion of the first full year of employment.
Current employees may also be awarded a one-time $500.
00 bonus for recruiting an applicant upon the referred applicant's completion of the field-training program.
Pay period when cleared.
Paid from Division the person they recruited was hired for.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
